Sunny start for Madrid

Morpeth Sporting Madrid U14s 5 Bedlington Juniors U14s 3

MORPETH defeated Bedlington in this entertaining NABC league game.

Sporting won well against Tynemouth but lost out to West Denton in previous games and so the home team were determined to capitalise on their chances in this game, having created an abundance against Denton only for luck to go against them.

Morpeth started brightly and within seconds Smith forced a save from the Bedlington keeper.

The hosts continued to dominate and the breakthrough came following a good ball from Wilson who put Smith through to beat the keeper.

Madrid doubled the advantage soon after, with Hodge and Robertson again freeing Smith.

Bedlington were beginning to compose themselves, but the back four of Campbell, Riley, Gascoigne and Thompson ensured the chances on Geddes’s goal were limited.

Just before the break, Morpeth made it 3-0 when Wilson hit the post and the ball fell to Smith to score his hat-trick.

After the restart, the home side again dominated proceedings and when Brown gained a corner, Gascoigne’s kick was met at the far post by Wilson to make it 4-0.

After this goal, Sporting began to ease the pressure and were caught by a good free-kick which lifted Bedlington.

This led to mini-revival, with a visiting winger going past Haywood and shooting past Geddes to make it 4-2.

Morpeth seemed to galvanise again and they played some good one-touch football, which let Smith in for their fifth.

The game was interrupted by injuries to Scott and Hodge and Vendetti came on as a replacement with Brown moving upfront.

Both sides had chances – the best for Sporting saw a great pass from Gascoigne split the defence for Smith to round the keeper, only to see his shot cleared off the line.

Bedlington managed a third just before the full-time whistle blew but the game was already won for Morpeth.

Morpeth squad: Geddes, Campbell, Riley, Gascoigne, Thompson, Hodge, Robertson, Wilson, Brown, Smith, Scott, Haywood, Vendetti.
