There’s no place like home for Baptists

Morpeth Baptist Church 4 Emmanuel Church Durham 1 North East Christian Fellowship League Division One

AFTER some disappointing results and performances away from home recently MBC returned to home action and ran out convincing winners over their Durham opposition.

The victory avenged a 3-0 defeat earlier in the season and saw MBC leapfrog Emmanuel up to fifth in the league.

It was an evenly-contested start to the match on a heavy pitch, barely playable in places.

Chances were created at both ends but it was MBC who took the lead as Lavender, latching onto a through-ball, crossed from the right for Bellamy to finish neatly.

The lead was short-lived, however, as minutes later an Emmanuel shot was blocked by Appleby, but the ball rebounded to a forward, who slotted it into the corner of the net.

MBC continued to create chances. A header, from one of many good corners taken by Garbutt, was directed narrowly over the bar by Johnson, and Chambers hit the post with a good shot with the keeper rooted to the spot, but it remained 1-1 until half-time.

Into the second half, MBC continued to press forward, while the defence, well-marshalled again by Dewhirst and Brown – held firm.

They eventually regained the lead when Lavender, frustrated with himself after minutes earlier seeing the keeper save his shot when through one-on-one, took on the left of the Emmanuel defence and headed towards the goal-line.

Then, in a moment of pure class and skill and from an extremely fine angle, he chipped the ball over the keeper’s head and watched as it dropped just inside the far post and nestled into the back of the net.

Emmanuel heads dropped, and as they tired MBC took full advantage with two late goals.

Firstly Johnson finished with a left-foot shot, then Chambers blasted in a shot from close range.

There were some good individual performances from many MBC players but above all it was an excellent team performance that resulted in a richly-deserved victory.
