Three on the bounce for the impressive Highway Men

Morpeth Town 2 Newton Aycliffe 1

THE Highway Men made it three league wins in a row with victory over Newton Aycliffe, writes David McMeekan.

Morpeth recorded their third consecutive league victory on Saturday when a late goal earned them three points. Newton Aycliffe were on top in the early stages and after Jamie Owens had headed against the woodwork, David Hiftle cleared off the line. Steven Mundy then did well to save from a fierce Jamie Owens effort.

David Hiftle was unlucky on 25 minutes, deflecting a Tom Atkinson effort into his own goal.

Morpeth came more into the game following this setback and Shaun Taylor was denied an equaliser when Peter Jameson dived to his right to make a fine save.

With Forster dominating on the right wing, Anderson and Jewels both went close to equalising. The goal that Morpeth’s approach play fully deserved came from Michael Chilton, with a diving header from a Stephen Anderson cross in the 60th minute.

With just 10 minutes left on the clock, Morpeth claimed victory with a superb effort by man-of-the-match Stephen Forster who after receiving a pass out of defence by David Hiftle advanced on goal from 50 yards before unleashing a terrific strike from 12 yards.
