Brandon Utd 0 Morpeth Town 3 STL Northern League Division Two

HAVING defeated fellow promotion contenders Esh Winning 2-0 in midweek, making it three victories in a row, Morpeth went into this game full of confidence, writes David McMeekan, Morpeth Town correspondent.

Playing down the slope with a strong wind at their back, the Highway Men spent the whole of the first half camped in the Brandon half with Mundy in goal reduced to the role of spectator.

Attacks and corners came and went as Morpeth laid siege to the Brandon goal.

The home goalkeeper Hindhaugh put in a faultless performance and, ably backed up by centre-backs Ferguson and Robinson, Howes, Lunn, Anderson and Fry were denied a goal that their attacking play deserved. Brandon went in at half-time buoyed by the 0-0 scoreline, determined to make the elements count in the second half.

This was not to be the case. Morpeth started the second half like the first – on the attack. Their short passing game putting Brandon on the back-foot, as Keenan, Grant and Fry in the Morpeth midfield took the game to Brandon.

The breakthrough finally came on 55 minutes. Ferguson headed a corner clear, but Hall on the edge of the box took a touch and smashed an unstoppable drive into the bottom corner of the net.

Morpeth continued to dominate play, giving Brandon little opportunity to mount any attack of note. As the game entered its final phase, Fry rose above the home defence to connect with a Keenan cross. Hindhaugh did well to claw the ball off the line but the on-rushing Anderson was on hand to force the ball over the line to make it 2-0.

From the restart, Morpeth mounted another attack. Grant fed the ball through to Anderson, whose fierce shot flew into the top of the net via the underside of the bar.

This was another excellent team performance, a fourth consecutive victory and third clean-sheet in a row that kept Morpeth in second place in the table.
