Durham City 1 Morpeth Town 1 FA Cup with Budweiser Preliminary Round

MORPETH earned a replay with a late goal after a good defensive display.

In the opening 10 minutes, Rookes in the Highway Men’s goal made the first of many fine saves when he denied Scott. Town then went close to breaking the deadlock when Jobling bravely saved Chilton’s effort.

Durham looked to find the breakthrough either side of half-time, but the inspired Rookes was equal to a Gray piledriver and then made the save of the match when he tipped Harrison’s drive to safety.

Morpeth were reduced to 10 men when Jewels received a straight red card and the hosts made their numerical advantage count on 70 minutes. Hotchkiss collected a Rookes clearance 35 yards from goal and gave the Town keeper no chance, scoring with a clinical finish.

But Rookes prevented Ward and Fenwick from extending City’s lead and a frustrated Fenwick received his marching orders for violent conduct with five minutes remaining.

This allowed the Highway Men back into the game. A long throughball from Dunn created panic in the home defence and Fry forced the ball home from close-range.

Morpeth are at home to Team Northumbria on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.
