Town wilt in the heat

Morpeth Town 0 North Shields 5 Northern League, Division Two

MORPETH found it tough going in the sunshine against promotion-chasing North Shields on Saturday.

The visitors had most of the possession early on, but were lucky to take the lead when an Akinbolu shot came back off the post and bounced off a defender into the net.

Akinbolu did get a goal when he tapped in at the back-post after a cross from the left.

Morpeth had more attacks in the second half but were unable to get back into the match and North Shields made it 3-0 when Akinbolu beat the offside trap and slotted the ball home to get his second.

Douglas got the away side’s fourth goal and he also made it 5-0 when he converted a penalty.

Morpeth made it an unhappy week on Tuesday night when they lost 4-1 at home to Crook Town.

Although Connor Andrews continued his good goal-scoring form, Devine hit a hat-trick for the visitors and Robinson was also on target.

The result means they will have to at the very least win three and draw one of their remaining four games to stand a chance of finishing second bottom in the table. Brandon United are the only team Morpeth can overtake.

Morpeth are at home to Guisborough Town on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, and Washington on Tuesday, kick-off 7.30pm.

As well as a physio, the club is looking for a programme editor and matchday staff for next season.

It also requires a sponsor to provide tracksuits and raincoats for ball boys and girls.
