Welcome return to play
Local footballers made a welcome return to action at the weekend following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.
Clubs in the North Northumberland League returned to competitive action, whilst those in the Northern Alliance, whose league season has been voided, restarted with a series of in-house cup competitions, as well as the NFA Minor Cup.
But for a number of other sides, including those in the National League, Northern Premier League and Northern League it was a case of as you were as their organising bodies had already declared play would be suspended until the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
Organisers say they are now awaiting official clarification from the government with regards to spectators attending games.
In the NFA Minor Cup Stobswood Welfare won 5-2 away to Blyth United Seniors, whilst Bedlington had a 1-0 victory over Gosforth Bohemiens. Blyth Town U23s lost 3-0 at home to Newcastle Independent.
In the NFA Benevolent Bowl, Ponteland United bowed out with a 3-0 away defeat at the hands of New Fordley, the hosts sealing the victory with some late goals.
In the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup, Wallington lost 3-0 away to Newcastle Blue Star, whilst in the Cowey Cup there were wins for both Morpeth FC and Morpeth Town Reserves.
Morpeth FC had a slender 1-0 away win over North Sunderland in a keenly contested tie at Seahouses, the only goal being scored by Liam Robertson in the first half, whilst the Reserves triumphed 3-0 at home over Blaydon Community with goals from Scott McCarthy (2) and Jordan Dodds.
In the North Northumberland League, Ellington lost 3-1 away to Belford.
