Youngsters hold their nerve to reach the fifth round

A team of Morpeth schoolboys held their nerve to progress in a major competition.

After a pulsating game away to Seaton Burn, the Newminster Middle School and Technology College Year 8 boys football team successfully progressed to the fifth round of one of the English Schools’ Football Association’s National Cup events.

The visitors went behind twice, but they showed great character and team spirit to fight back to draw level at 2-2 with goals from Jamie Barry and Joe Briddon. Extra-time could not separate the sides, but Newminster came out eventual winners on penalties. The shoot-out score was 7-6.

Robert Eadington made the crucial saves and Ben Michelson scored the winning penalty.

The boys now face a tricky away tie against Carnforth High School from Lancaster in the next round. The match is set to take place on Wednesday, January 14.
