KEVI get the glory

King Edward VI School U15s 31 Queen Elizabeth High School Hexham U15s 17 U15 County Cup Final

THE KEVI squad were fully focused on cup success when they travelled to the 4G pitch at Druid Park on the outskirts of Newcastle for the final.

From the kick-off, the KEVI pressure was evident and it forced Queen Elizabeth into mistakes – one of which was losing the ball from a scrum next to their own line when they had the put-in.

The Morpeth side took advantage as number eight Dan Brown broke off the back of the scrum and powered through a tackle to score in the corner. A good conversion by Rory Smith made it 7-0.

Queen Elizabeth showed some good direct running in response but when the ball was spun wide, number 14 Harry Thompson intercepted the pass to run 60 metres and score under the posts. The try was converted.

A quick break by number nine Chris Donaghy and some good forward pressure resulted in number two Rich Forsyth driving over the line from close range. Another excellent conversion by Smith made it 21-0.

At this point KEVI took their foot off the gas and Queen Elizabeth scored a try down the wing to reduce the gap to 16 points at half-time.

Despite starting the second half brightly, the Morpeth school team suffered a couple of injury setbacks and their opponents scored a converted try. But Brown re-entered the game with his ankle strapped and after handing off one defender, he threw a huge dummy to score in the corner.

Although Queen Elizabeth hit back with another try, KEVI number seven Will Shotton drove over powerfully from five yards to seal the victory (31-17) to the delight of his team-mates and coach Jonny Foster.
