Batsmen fail to deliver

Morpeth (85 all out) v Tynedale (110 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, A Division League Cup Final

A POOR batting display cost Morpeth silverware in the A Division final at Consett CC.

Tynedale batted first and reached 19 when Crichton edged a Chris Horner delivery to wicketkeeper Ben Maxted.

Spinner Paul Elliott was bowling well and he took two quick wickets to leave Tynedale on 40-3.

The batting side made some decent progress through Drake (30) and Darling (21), but they were dismissed by Jonny Craigs and Gary Christie respectively before they could make major scores.

Horner returned to good effect as he took a further three wickets to leave Tynedale struggling.

They finished their 20 overs on 110 all out after Parker was run out by Nick Forster during the last delivery of the innings.

But Morpeth also found it hard going with the bat as the top three batsmen – Craigs, Jonny Foster and Maxted – were dismissed for a combined total of just 10 runs.

Forster and Sander tried to re-build but Sander getting run out for five triggered another collapse as Andrew Poxton and Horner both quickly returned to the pavilion.

Forster hit a couple of boundaries but he was then caught for 17 to leave Morpeth 41-7.

It looked all over, but Christie had other ideas and he played some intelligent shots to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Useful support came from Elliott, who was also scoring at a run a ball. The turning point in the match came when he was caught for 16.

Unfortunately for Morpeth, Paul Wonders and James Craigs were out cheaply to give Tynedale a 25-run victory. Christie was left unbeaten on 26.

Cant (3-16) and Laidlaw (3-24) were the pick of the opposition bowlers.
