Batting collapse blamed for defeat

Ashington II (161-8) v Ponteland II (90 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division B1

A BATTING collapse was to blame as Ponteland Seconds fell to a 71-run defeat.

Ashington Seconds started well after winning the toss and deciding to bat. The openers were heading towards a 50 partnership when Ruddick missed an Andy Denyer delivery and was stumped by Chris Morgan.

Denyer took another two wickets and James Ealey made an important breakthrough when he had Ross (33) caught by David Waters.

The home side passed the 100 mark thanks to Storey (21) and Thewlis (29).

They were both eventually out, caught off the bowling of Waters and Duncan McGregor respectively.

Waters took another two scalps to finish with figures of three for 27, but Ashington’s lower order did score quickly and they ended their 45 overs on 161-8.

It started to go wrong for Pont once openers Ealey (13) and Will Urwin (seven) were dismissed in quick succession.

They were soon six down as Whitworth, Collins, Potts and Williams all took wickets for Ashington.

Waters and Morgan steadied the ship, but Waters was out LBW for 19 when he looked set for a decent score.

Morgan defended well, however he could not up his run rate and was eventually run out.

Denyer (13) managed to reach double figures, although he could not take Ponteland’s total score to triple figures as they were all out for 90.
