Warenford v Mitford Alnwick & District Cricket League

A RECORD-breaking Mitford opening partnership of more than 200 led to a magnificent nine-wicket victory.

This was a big statement of intent in their opening fixture against the league champions for the last two years.

The home side batted first, but got off to a bad start when Michael Thompson was out for a duck – caught Jonny Lees bowled Matty Lees.

Warenford got into their stride with Kevin and Brian Thompson playing themselves in. A key breakthrough was made when Kevin was caught by Matty Lees off the bowling of David Wigham for 23.

Wigham struck again soon after when he bowled Ian Thompson for seven, but Tony Potts and Brian Thompson piled on the runs. The duo were looking to pose an imposing score and made some progress, however skipper Matthew Ellinor stepped up to take two crucial wickets.

Potts (55) was stumped by Jonny Lees and the wicketkeeper snapped up the chance when Brian Thompson (97) edged an Ellinor delivery.

No more wickets fell, with Graham Rogerson (21 not out) and Gordon Stephenson (13 not out) taking the hosts to a very respectable total of 228 for five.

Mark Parrish and Ellinor opened for the visitors and scored steadily against some tight bowling from John Hogg and Rogerson. They kept the scoreboard ticking over at the target rate against the veteran Tom Smith and Kevin Thompson.

Ellinor eventually went for 77, sharing a record opening partnership of 204.

Terry Dunn (17 not out) joined the unstoppable Parrish with four overs to go and smashed a six and four in the penultimate over as Mitford emphatically won with an over to spare.

Parrish got his season off to a perfect start with his fantastic innings of 123 not out.
