THE Men’s team at Ponteland Golf Club made a dramatic improvement from 2010 to almost win the Newcastle and District League.
They rose from 11th last year to runners-up this time round in the top competition for Northumberland and Tyneside.
It went down to the last set of games as Ponteland finished just four points behind winners City of Newcastle.
There were 10 players used by the club throughout the season and Russell Hayhoe was the top points scorer, with Peter Sym second highest. The top six players play off one handicap or better.
Ponteland Men’s Captain for 2010/11, Malcolm Sym, said: “I thought we had a stronger team for this season, but I was surprised that we were in contention for the title right until the last game.
“Our success was down to a really good team spirit as well as players like Russell and Peter stepping up to win a lot of games.
“We have an excellent group of young players who have come through the junior system into the senior team – an example from this year’s squad is Jordan Brown – and a couple more could make the breakthrough next year.
“It’s quite difficult for all clubs to keep their juniors when they reach senior level and so at Ponteland we encourage them to stay by providing them with a reduced subscription until they finish their higher education.”
