An exciting new project aimed at giving youngsters an introduction to basketball is being launched in Morpeth.

The satellite club will give children the opportunity to try their hand at the sport during sessions at Chantry Middle School on Saturday mornings.

There will be separate sessions for nine to ten-year-olds (from 10am to 11am) and 11 to 13-year-olds (from 11am to noon).

The project is being funded by Northumberland Sport and sessions will be delivered by qualified coaches from Morpeth Basketball Club, which has been established in the town for more than 16 years.

“The idea is to introduce children to basketball in a non-competitive environment, with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment,” said Paul New, chairman and head coach of Morpeth Basketball Club.

“Those children who are keen to take their interest to the next level and play competitively will be offered the opportunity to do so by progressing to join Morpeth Basketball Club, which is based at the Riverside Leisure Centre and runs both junior and senior teams.”

Places at the Chantry sessions will be restricted to 20 in each age group and will be on a first come, first served basis. The cost will be £2 per session.
