Comfortable win for Pont thirds

Percy Main III (96-9) v Ponteland III (97-3) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Northumberland C Division

AFTER losing the toss, Ponteland thirds were asked to field first last Thursday evening, but were soon among the wickets as wicketkeeper Neil Stanley claimed his first Ponteland dismissal with an edge behind off Dave Waters.

A second and third quickly followed as Alan Varley lured the batsman down the wicket for a stumping to Stanley, then Varley claimed his 300th Ponteland midweek team wicket when the batsman skied one and Stanley came charging out from behind the stumps to take the catch midway down the wicket.

The wickets kept on falling as Varley took his third, Martin Tallentyre picked up three and John Hill rattled the stumps of two batsmen. Percy Main could only manage a total of 96 for nine off their 20 overs.

The home side’s bowlers came out determined to make a game of it, but once Stanley and Andy Graves came through the opening few overs without losing their wicket, they put Pont in a strong position.

Graves in particular was playing some great attacking shots and he hit four sixes before he was dismissed for 28 with the score on 53.

Any hopes that Percy Main had of putting Ponteland under pressure were soon dispelled by Faizal Padikaran who launched his second ball down the ground for four and batted fluently to score 22 before being run out.

Stanley had settled well though by this point and despite the loss of Varley, he guided the visitors to a seven-wicket win with more than three overs to spare scoring an unbeaten 40.
