MORPETH enjoyed some high-quality national sporting action on Easter Monday.

The town played host to a major duathlon, which was designated as a qualifier for the ITU Sprint Distance World Championships in Ottawa, Canada, this August.

More than 250 competitors tackled a 6km run through the town centre and Carlisle Park, jumped on their bikes for a 29km ride through nearby villages and countryside and then returned for a final 4km foot race to the finish line in the Market Place.

The winners of the men’s and women’s races were David Thomas and Jessica Bacon respectively.

The event was organised by Vo2max Racing, which has developed from the Tri Northumberland club.

It had the backing of the Morpeth Town Team and members were pleased to see an increase in the number of residents coming into the town centre on an Easter Monday. In addition, the competitors and those who came with them increased the takings of many local businesses.
