Defeat for seconds

Mitford II (126) v Newton I (130-4) West Tyne Senior League, Division Two

A POOR performance with the bat consigned Mitford seconds to a home defeat.

They were under pressure when Jack Taylor and Terry Dunn were dismissed early into the innings.

Matthew Ellinor and Colin Crowe steadied the ship and played a few attacking shots but just as they looked to be on their way towards half centuries, they were caught for 26 and 22 respectively.

Nick Gaynor was the other batsman to make it into double figures and he tried to find the boundary as much as he could as he started to run out of batting partners.

In the end, he was bowled for 32. Mitford were eventually all out for 126.

Newton’s openers looked nervy and the home crowd had some hope when Wilkie was bowled by Gaynor and Kieran Mole had O’Neill caught in the field.

But Scattergood came in next and looked assured as he regularly hit scoring shots.

Although David Wigham took two wickets, Scattergood (59 not out) and Kim (14 not out) took the visitors to their victory target with six wickets to spare.
