Amie Waugh has won for the first time under rules against the professional jockeys on her father’s Newyearsresolution.
At Newcastle Races recently, in testing conditions, Molesden-based trainer Simon Waugh sent out Newyearsresolution to win the KB Sheet Metal 2m6f Handicap Hurdle for the Northumberland Racing Club.
He was ridden by Simon’s daughter, Amie, to secure her first win against the professionals after just three rides.
The plan had been to jump off near the front but Amie judged that they had gone off too quickly in the testing conditions and dropped back to hunt round the first circuit. She then allowed him to quietly jump to the front where he pricked his ears and held off a strong challenge from Conjola, who also happens to be owned by a Northumberland Racing Club member.
Amie has been riding the 11-year-old in point to points, winning three times over the years, and he was put into the syndicate to replace a horse they lost.
Whilst he jumps the bigger fences quite well, he took to hurdling like a duck to water, gaining lengths with each flight.
The Northumberland Racing Club has been going barely 18 months but has already enjoyed three wins and several good placings.
