Disappointing end to season

Lanchester (86-5) v Morpeth (85-9) Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

A POOR batting performance meant Morpeth ended the season with a disappointing defeat.

Their innings got off to a bad start when Anderson was trapped lbw without scoring and Wonders was bowled for just four runs.

Poxton and Rutherford steadied the ship, but just as they played themselves in they were dismissed for 19 and 11 respectively.

Cooper took the fight to the Lanchester bowlers and played some decent attacking shots to take Morpeth towards three figures, but he had no-one supporting him with runs at the other end.

And Cooper was then bowled for 38 as the visitors finished on 85 for nine.

Morpeth’s bowlers had not given up hope and Rutherford made two early breakthroughs before dismissing key batsman Ahmed for 12.

However, Brinton (49 not out) was in good nick for the hosts and he scored runs at regular intervals. Despite two wickets from Lawn, Lanchester reached their victory target with five wickets to spare.

The result meant that Morpeth finished ninth in the table on 177 points.
