Duo stay calm in high winds to taste victory

THE finalists refused to be blown off course as Northumberland’s exciting competition for young golfers reached a windswept conclusion.

The 2013 March2Matfen had to be reduced to nine holes after high winds made conditions unplayable.

At one point, the wind brought down a tree, which led organisers the Northumberland County Golf Partnership to set up a shortened version of the grand final in the interests of the players’ safety.

However, the tough conditions did not stop the winners producing some excellent golf at Matfen Hall, with 12-year-old Jai Scott (Newbiggin) and 15-year-old Megan Forman (Newbiggin/Alnmouth Village) both returning 18 points in the stableford competition to win the Boys’ and Girls’ titles respectively.

The club also hosted one of the nine qualifying events. The others were played at Seahouses, Allendale, Alnmouth, Tynemouth, Newcastle United, Morpeth, Hexham and Ponteland.
