FORMER Morpeth bowler Eddie Nicholson has been selected as a International Technical Officer (Umpire) for the Lawn Bowls events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next July.

He played at Morpeth Bowling Club and was Secretary at St George’s Hospital Bowling Club from 1968 until he moved to Perth, Scotland, in 1975 when he got a promotion to Nurse Manager.

This will be his third Commonwealth Games as an umpire – previously he was on duty at the games in Edinburgh in 1986 and then Delhi in 2010.

In 2008, he was Chief Umpire at the World Bowls Champion of Champions competition at Aberdeen.

Since 1995, when he retired from nursing, he has been the Scottish Bowling Association (and for the past three years Bowls Scotland) District Secretary for Perthshire.

Upon selection, Mr Nicholson said: “It was Hector Woodman who started me off umpiring in the early 70s with tales of what it was like at the Commonwealth Games when he officiated in Edinburgh in 1970.

“Now aged 73, I think after my third games it will be a good time to retire as an umpire.”
