Ponteland I (114-3) v Shotley Bridge I (113) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

PONTELAND’S first XI secured a double over Shotley Bridge with a comprehensive victory.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat, but they were soon made to regret that decision.

Liam Cosgrove removed both openers and Hubber hit a Iftikhar Fazal delivery into the safe hands of Paul Lindsay.

Fazal ran out the dangerous Graham for 35 after Ed Common and Mark Turnbull each took two wickets. Wayne Ritzema also claimed two scalps as Shotley Bridge were all out for just 113.

In reply, after losing two early wickets, Anthony Quarrell (30) and James Ritzema (44 not out) put Ponteland in control with a partnership of 69.

Tom Seymour, who finished 23 not out, continued the momentum and, together with James Ritzema, steered the hosts home to a seven-wicket win.

In Division B1, Ponteland seconds travelled to their Shotley Bridge counterparts and the away side’s bowlers recovered well from a difficult start.

The top three batsmen scored a total of 115, but only two others in the home side’s line-up reached double figures as they were bowled out for 163.

Andy Denyer continued his good form by finishing his 13 overs with figures of six for 39 and there were also wickets for David Waters, two, Duncan McGregor, one, and Nick Brown, one.

Despite a decent knock of 38 from captain Chris Morgan and 13 from Brown, Ponteland seemed up against it with the score on 127-7 with five overs remaining.

But Jonny Appleby (67 not out) had other ideas and, accompanied by Denyer, they scored the required runs with four balls to spare.
