LONGHIRST Hall Golf Club has made a flying start to this season’s campaigns, with positive results for both the men’s and junior teams.

The juniors started the season away to arch rivals Morpeth and gained a creditable 6-6 draw. This was followed up with an excellent performance to beat Wallsend 12-0.

The junior organiser at Longhirst, Gordon Sanderson, said: “We’ve had a great start to the season.

“We lost four great players this season on grounds of their age but we have a really good bunch of younger lads keen to take their places.

“The win against Wallsend was even more enjoyable as we had our top three handicappers playing for the men’s team. It really bodes well for the future.”

To back this up, the men had Longhirst’s first ever competitive match after entering the North Northumberland golf league. A very difficult opening fixture at home to Bedlington in The Davison Cup began with a fantastic 3-2 victory.

Longhirst Club Captain Kevin Martin said: “I’m very proud to captain what is such a progressive club with a great depth of talent and delighted at the outcome of this season’s early results.

“We have a very exciting year to come here at Longhirst.”

The club is again hosting the ‘Rusty’s Travel Classic’ PGA EuroPro Tour this June. Free entry to the week is available.

The practice day takes place on Monday, June 20, and the Pro-Am is the following day (21st). The tournament itself will be held from June 22 to 24.
