A PONTELAND teenager will take on the best junior triathletes from across Europe after an excellent domestic season.
As well as gaining all A*s and As in his GCSEs, Greg Chambers has won a number of triathlon events in his age group and he came second in the British Championships and Elite Youth Super Series competitions.
Triathlon involves an open water swim followed by cycling then running.
The Ponteland High School Year 12 student competes throughout the spring and summer but trains for approximately 22 hours per week all year round before and after school.
He also attends triathlon camps every school holiday with the Olympic Talent Squad.
At the beginning of September Greg represented Great Britain in the European Youth Relay Championships in Spain, where his team of three finished in sixth place. Next year, he will compete in the European Junior Cup.
But he is not the only talented triathlete in the family as sister Philippa, also a student at Ponteland High School in Year 10, came third in her age category at the British Championships.
Ponteland High School Headteacher Kieran McGrane said: “Greg and his sister Philippa are truly inspirational students of whom Ponteland High School is so proud.
“It is superb that we have students of this calibre, who combine academic excellence with high-level athletic talent. Competing at a national level is a costly business and hopefully they can find sponsorship from businesses.
“I’m sure we will be celebrating their successes for a long time to come.”
