THE rain did not dampen the performance of a Morpeth windsurfer at Derwent Reservoir on Sunday in round two of the RYA Team15 Championship.
In the 4.5m fleet, 14-year-old Gustavo Takiguchi, sailing for the Coquet Crushers, kept a cool head to win his class ahead of the Pugneys Pirates (Wakefield) duo of Jacob Collett and Thomas Sambrook.
The 5.8m and 6.8m classes went to Pugneys however, and windsurfers from Derwent Devils were victorious in the 3.5m section. Team15, which is now in its 11th year, is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) initiative set up to make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters at a grassroots level.
The squad with the best score at the end of the summer wins the RYA North Zone Team15 Inter-Club Championship and gets to compete against all the other RYA zone winners in the national final – the Team15 Champions Cup.
Fun and informal training sessions take place at T15 clubs across the region for children up to the age of 15, which are run weekly by specialist RYA coaches.
