Morpeth Harriers members were very shocked and deeply saddened to learn that one of their longest serving colleagues, Bill Woods, had passed away in hospital on Saturday afternoon following a short illness.

Club secretary Mike Bateman paid tribute to Bill on the club’s website, indicating that he had been a most loyal servant in a period of over 35 years and, in that time, he had been a valuable committee member, official and, until three years ago, had been very active as the club’s chairman, ensuring that Morpeth Harriers always maintained a very healthy position, both competitively and in an official capacity.

Bill was also well known in the wider athletics world, having given his time to the British Athletics League as a most diligent Divisional Secretary, and had always remained popular with his fellow officials.

Many condolences and heartfelt sympathies are passed to Bill’s wife June, as well as Gary and Karen and other close members of his family on his unexpected passing.

A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at St Robert’s Church in Oldgate from 11am.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to any registered cancer charity.
