Ponteland (142 all out) v Ashington (148/2) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

It was a difficult day for Ponteland Cricket Club’s first team on Saturday, as their opponents were superior with bat and ball.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat, and they got off to a decent start.

However, they struggled once Wayne Ritzema and James Whiteley were dismissed for 36 and 29 respectively. Niall Penfold hit three fours and one six in his innings of 34, but John Gardner (13) was the only other player to reach double figures as Pont were all out for 142.

Ashington suffered an early setback when Wood was caught by Ritzema off the bowling of Gardner for six.

However, they soon got into their stride, with Prudhoe in particular regularly finding the boundary.

Penfold trapped Singh LBW for 30 but Penfold (56 not out) and O’Brien (51 not out) saw Ashington to their victory target.

Morpeth’s second team agonisingly lost by one wicket at home to their Greenside counterparts.

The hosts only made 98 all out. Their top scorers were Alistair Clow (38 not out) and Thomas Truscott (25).

But they bowled very well and came very close to snatching an unlikely victory. Elliott Clark, three, Benjamin Jones, two, Adam Lawn, two, Sam Bethell, one and Truscott, one, were the Morpeth wicket takers.
