Important home win for club’s first team

Morpeth I (216/8) v Seaton Burn I (158 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A2

A good team performance enabled Morpeth to record their first league victory of the season.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat. After losing Callum Urwin early, John Turnbull (37) and James Sander (45) put together a useful partnership.

They were out before they could make their half centuries, but Rick Jones achieved this after playing a number of excellent shots. He was eventually dismissed for 75.

Paul Jackson and James Craigs scored 20 and 17 respectively as Morpeth ended their innings on 216 for eight.

In reply, Seaton Burn got off to a bad start when Kyle edged a Craigs delivery through to wicketkeeper Jones and Brown departed in similar fashion, this time off the bowling of Harshil Patel.

Callum Lawn picked up two wickets and Patel got another one. Weldon was in decent nick for the visitors and looked set for a half century, but he was run out by Patel for 40.

It looked to be all over when Jackson trapped Ali lbw for five, but three of the lower order played themselves in as they tried to pull off an unlikely victory.

However, Gray (34) and Redpath (28) were both dismissed by Kurran Dhugga and the last wicket fell when White (18) could only hit a Craigs delivery into the safe hands of Turnbull. Morpeth won by 58 runs.

Morpeth seconds were away to their Seaton Burn counterparts on Saturday.

The hosts scored 266 for six, largely thanks to a great knock of 151 not out by Irving-Carr. Matthew Dodds, Sam Bethell and Simon Stiansen claimed two scalps each for Morpeth II.

The away side lost a couple of early wickets, however they were in with a shout when Doug Turnbull (75) and Bethell (60) were at the crease. But once they were both out, Morpeth II struggled and they finished their 45 overs on 192 for nine.
