Ladies maintain unbeaten run

Lancaster Ladies I 1 Morpeth Ladies I 1

MORPETH Ladies travelled to Lancaster hoping to continue their winning streak after their sweet victory over Wakefield in their last league game.

Snow had delayed play the previous week so the adrenaline had been building up for a fortnight. It was a nervous start for captain Bowler as a third of her team has been caught in the M6 vortex. This was always going to be a tough match for the mighty green and gold but an inspirational pre-match team talk sent the troops out with confidence.

Lancaster lived up to expectations and put Morpeth under early pressure, making some very strong breaks through the middle of the pitch.

Morpeth reacted quickly and set up a strong defensive formation to keep the attacks at bay. Play evened out and Morpeth began to find their stride, returning the pressure in the opposition’s half.

Lancaster took the lead late in the first half through a lucky deflection.

A strike from the outside of the circle was deliberately left by Rose to claim possession; however the ball rebounded off the post straight onto a Lancaster stick.

Morpeth went into the half-time break a little deflated. But they started the second half with confidence and determination.

They dominated possession and created some good breaks. Hagan had switched to the centre of the pitch and was starting to look more dangerous.

Bell’s perfectly placed pass from the middle of the field found the path of Hagan and with great composure and accuracy she played the ball into the circle, took the early strike and struck it with precision leaving the goalkeeper wondering what had just happened.

The equaliser lifted the visitors’ spirits and a flurry of attacks led to a string of near-misses from Quemby and Blissett on the far-post.
