West Tyne League, Division Two Mitford II (76-4) v Stocksfield IV (75 all out)
Mitford II and Stocksfield IV arrived at Mitford Park to be greeted by a new Lottery-funded pavilion.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the home team made early inroads into the Stocksfield batting line-up. Dan Tuite took two quick wickets, with opening bowling partner Patrick Smith (making his senior league debut) keeping it tight at the other end.
Catches were sticking, with both Andrew O’Neill and then Michael Briggs (wk) holding on to tough chances.
The bowling changes brought instant results, with Andrew O’Neill taking two wickets at the Mitford end, before taking a further four wickets at the Pavilion end, finishing with 8.1-2-15-6, backed up by Craig Mole who kept the batsmen guessing with some varied deliveries with no wickets to show for his efforts and the returning Patrick Smith who chipped in with two mid-order wickets leaving Stocksfield 75 all out in the 29th over.
Batting second, O’Neill, opening the batting with David Wigham, got one from Catnach that bounced past his boot laces, taking his middle stump.
That brought Mitford’s other debutant, the vastly experienced Chris Kirtley into the middle. Wigham fell for seven runs and Andy Gayner hit a couple of lovely shots before falling victim to Catnach for nine.
Mitford’s captain Graeme Potts was in at five, with the score on 31. He quickly found the boundary with his favoured legside shots and kept the score ticking towards the target of 76, with Kirtley pitching in with 18 runs, falling with only five runs needed.
Smith (1no) joined Potts (23no) to hit the winning run as Mitford II were victorious by six wickets.
Mitford I lost by three wickets to Humshaugh I.
