Benwell & Walbottle I (240-9) v Morpeth I (77 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A2
MORPETH fell to a heavy defeat after coming up against opponents that were better with bat and ball on the day.
The visitors made a breakthrough with the score on 22 when Anderson was bowled by Essex, but the partnership between Birrell (60) and Denehy (36) put Benwell and Walbottle in command.
Haque and Brown in the lower middle order also made decent knocks as the hosts finished on 240 for nine.
Morpeth’s bowlers stuck at it and Essex finished with three wickets. Mackay and Patel took two wickets each and McClaughlin removed Birrell.
In reply, Patel was positive, but the innings went quickly downhill once he was trapped lbw for 12.
Wickets fell at regular intervals, although there was some resistance from Essex (14) and Mackay, who hit six boundaries in his innings of 25 not out.
But he ran out of partners and Morpeth were bowled out for 77.
Haque was the pick of Benwell and Walbottle’s bowlers with figures of five for 23.
