Morpeth RFC 58-7 Novos
After a glorious summer, the 2018/19 rugby season kicked off at Mitford Road when Morpeth took on Novos in their now customary August County Cup tie.
Not only is it a County Cup match, more importantly it also serves as an excellent pre-season run-out for the forthcoming league campaign, which no doubt will prove to be as tough as ever with a total of five new sides entering into this highly competitive arena.
Morpeth safely disposed of a spirited Novos side, making it through to the next round, with a blend of forward power and the promise of pace in the backs.
The first 20 minutes possibly saw Morpeth at their best, as they crossed the Novos line on four occasions, to effectively put the match out of sight.
The returning and impressive Telford was first across the whitewash followed by forward domination with Long, Burnham and Sandall all scoring. A couple of Ben Hornby conversions and a penalty added further points to the total.
The half-time score of 34-7 was delivered when Elliott scored a converted try with Novos ending the first 40 minutes scoring with a try of their own.
The second half, despite numerous substitutions, saw Morpeth continue in the same vein.
Craigs, Tait, and Dynan all scored tries, with Hornby adding the conversions.
All in all this was a solid Morpeth performance, however, the real test starts a week on Saturday when they begin their league programme with an away match against Morley for what will,in all probablility, be a very difficult encounter.
