Onslaught leaves league leaders struggling

Mitford (309-3) v Berwick (170 all out) Alnwick and District League

AN outstanding innings by Terry Dunn set Mitford on their way to a crushing victory at home to the league leaders.

The visitors won the toss and asked their opponents to bat, a decision their captain may have a few sleepless nights over.

Berwick made a promising start with bowler McCreath dismissing Mark Parrish for only one, but this brought Dunn to the crease and he began to attack the bowling in his usual aggressive manner.

After being dropped on 13, he moved past 50 with ease and the Mitford score continued to accelerate, with Matthew Ellinor providing solid support.

Dunn brought up his hundred in quick time and his incredible innings finally came to an end in the 37th over, with the score on 229. He was stumped off the bowling of Steven Dunn having amassed a total of 144, including 22 fours and two sixes.

With eight overs remaining there was still time for a cameo innings from Scott Lawson who smashed an unbeaten 51, including six fours and two sixes. Mitford ended on 309–3, with the ever reliable Ellinor finishing 82 not out.

In the Berwick innings, youngster Kieran Little struck in his opening over, demolishing the middle stump of opener Golightly for one.

Fellow opener Ian Thompson rode his luck and finally fell for 18 attempting to pull a short delivery from Matty Lees, skying a high catch to scampering wicketkeeper Jonny Lees.

Glen Bird took the attack to Mitford and scored a well deserved 50 before feathering behind off the bowling of Matty Lees and Steven Dunn was next to follow in the exact same manner.

Dave Wigham and Scott Lawson chipped in with two wickets apiece to bring a comprehensive victory into sight before Berwick were finally all out for 172 when veteran Colin Crowe demolished the off stump of Dominic McCreath.
