Pont cling on to league hope

Whickham (150 all out) v Ponteland (207-4) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A2

PONTELAND kept their faint promotion hopes alive with an away-day victory.

The home side won the toss and decided to bowl, but they came up against a man in form as Wayne Ritzema scored his second successive century, batting through the innings for an unbeaten 105.

He received useful support from Stuart Taylor (32) a first XI best of 29 from Dan Wright and Tom Seymour (17). The visitors finished their 50 overs on 207 for four, which gave Whickham some hope that they could perform a successful run chase.

They started well, however they kept losing wickets at bad times, with Seymour accounting for the top three batsmen. He ended up taking five wickets in total.

Iftikhar Fazal also impressed with figures of three for 29, but the best bowling performance of the day came from John Gardner – whose 15 overs cost just 15 runs. As is often the way with these types of spell, he finished with just a single wicket, although it was that of dangerman Rodger, who scored 33 runs. Taylor was the other Pont wicket-taker as Whickham were dismissed for 150.

News that Consett won again though means that they need 40 points from their last two games and hope Consett lose both of their matches heavily.
