Pont dig deep to get a much-needed victory

Ponteland I (214/7) v Consett I (213 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

Ponteland Cricket Club’s first team achieved their first league win of the season in a thrilling game on Saturday.

The visitors batted first and their top and middle order struggled as they were reduced to 61-6, largely thanks to excellent bowling by John Gardner, who took four wickets in total.

Mansoor was the one notable exception and he hit 11 fours and eight sixes in his fantastic knock of 127.

Consett were eventually bowled out for 213. David Waters, two, Duncan McGregor and James Whiteley were the other Pont wicket-takers and there were also two run-outs.

The hosts got off to a reasonable start in reply, but they went from 26 for no wicket to 43 for four, with only Wayne Ritzema of the top order reaching double figures.

However, the advantage swung back to Ponteland after a great partnership between Stuart Taylor and Jonny Appleby (41).

Although Taylor was dismissed on 93, his innings including 11 fours, Gardner’s 27 not out saw Pont home.
