Ponteland (209-7) v Seaton Burn (178 all out) Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League, Division A2
PONTELAND guaranteed a third-placed finish in the league with a win at home to Seaton Burn.
Batting first, the home side’s openers compiled a steady 78-run partnership before Chad Hitchcock, in his final appearance before returning to Australia, was bowled for 35.
Stuart Taylor followed moments later and Tom Seymour, with a cameo 19, and Dan Wright (five) also fell to leave the score on 128-5.
Tom Common battled hard to steady the rocking innings before falling for just two off 27 balls and opener Wayne Ritzema after reaching his seventh score over 50 of the season was dismissed for 69.
Next to go was John Gardner but Dave Waters (31 not out) and Jonny Appleby (26 not out) were in confident mood and laid into the Seaton Burn bowlers. Their 46-run partnership was compiled in just seven overs to take the score to 209 for seven.
The hosts made an early breakthrough as Brown was superbly caught by wicketkeeper Wright low one-handed off John Gardner.
The Seaton Burn batsmen dug in, but all of Pont’s bowlers made a contribution to make sure the visitors came up short.
Andy Denyer (one for 30) and Ian Smart (one for 22) claimed the next two wickets and Taylor clung onto a stinger when Wheldon drilled one straight back at him, then in his next over a mishit presented Taylor (two for 17) with his second caught and bowled.
Gardner (3 for 45) returned to strike twice more, Common (one for 27) got in on the act, Appleby ran out the number nine batsman with a direct hit and Dave Waters (one for 13) claimed the final wicket as Seaton Burn were all out for 178.
