Pont’s hat-trick of wins for first time in division

Ponteland I (249-5) v Consett I (216) Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League, Division A1

PONT ones recorded their third win in a row for the first time in Division A1 and now sit comfortably in the top half of the table.

The Northumbrians batted first and after a stand of 34, Paul Lindsay (15) was run out. The score had moved to 70 in the 17th over when Anthony Quarrell (19) was out LBW.

Consett’s spinners started to slow proceedings down and Wayne Ritzema mistimed a shot down the ground to be out on 43 and when James Ritzema fell for 29, the innings sat on 120 for 4 off 30 overs.

Any hopes the visitors had of taking control of the game though were dispelled by Stuart Taylor and Tom Seymour, the latter mixing defense with attack, bringing his second 50 of the season up off 44 balls with his fourth six. Taylor, after what he described himself as a scratchy start, battled his way back into form and reached his first 50 of the year in the same manner with a six down the ground.

The 119-run stand was finally broken with Seymour bowled for 66 and it was left to Dan Wright (10*) with a four-ball cameo to boost the score to 249-5.

Ponteland’s bowlers started solidly and the breakthrough came on 30 when Mark Turnbull had Waters (23) well taken at slip by Wayne Ritzema. A second Turnbull wicket followed on 53, but Ponteland seemed to go surprisingly flat in the field for 12 overs as Consett doubled their score and 100-2 at the halfway point left the game wide open.

But further tidy bowling, particularly by Turnbull (4-45 off 15 overs) led to a 33-run victory.
