The Morpeth Horse Races return to Tranwell on Sunday with the first race starting at 1pm.

Morpeth trainer Jo Boswell will bring her winning mare, Splendid Blue, hoping to secure her seventh overall win.

This remarkable mare won the National Mares Championship last season, beating southern horses associated with champion trainer Paul Nichols and the prolific Waley-Cohen family.

Jo and her supporters attended the prize-giving dinner at Cheltenham last November.

Splendid Blue has already won twice this season, bringing her tally at the Kelso track to five straight wins.

A newcomer to the scene is James Cookson’s gelding, Flash Garden, who won very impressively up at Ayr on his first outing on a racecourse a couple of weeks ago.

Tranwell is always a popular course as it is only raced on once a season and the fences are well built and challenging.

With hard standing to park on, food, bars and bookies, and only five minutes from Morpeth, it should make for a very entertaining day out.
