Seconds land further in the relegation mire

Annfield Plain II (98-2) v Morpeth II (97 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division B1

A POOR batting performance put Morpeth Seconds in deeper relegation trouble on Saturday.

The visitors’ innings started off badly when Paul Wonders was caught for a duck and Adam Lawn met the same fate.

A recovery partnership was put together by Max Goodings and Stephen Cowell (seven), but Cowell’s resistance was finally broken when he was caught and bowled by McArdle.

Bowen, Tordoff and Jones got up and running but were all dismissed in single figures and Goodings was trapped lbw by Hawden for 23 to leave Morpeth in deep trouble.

Young player Kurran Dhugga stepped up to the plate and played solid cricket, combined with a few attacking shots.

He performed admirably to finish 25 not out and found some support from tail-enders Jonathan Rose (eight) and Chris Maxted (six) as Morpeth reached 97 all out to give themselves a slight chance of victory.

They were given a boost early in Annfield Plain II’s innings when Michael Robinson was bowled by Jones.

But the home side recovered and the combination of Maughan and Chris Robinson took them to the brink of victory.

Maughan was caught by Bowen off the bowling of Jones for 33 but the aggressive Robinson, who hit 10 boundaries in his knock of 53 not out, saw Annfield Plain home by eight wickets.

The defeat leaves Morpeth bottom of the table and they need to improve their form quickly if they want to avoid dropping into Division B2.
