Morpeth (142) v Alnmouth & Lesbury (143-3)

Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division A2

MORPETH’S first XI were defeated in their final game of the campaign on Saturday.

The home side won the toss and decided to bat, but they were soon in trouble when Nick Gerber, Stephen Cowell, Sandy Meikle and Charles Anderson were all dismissed cheaply.

There was some resistance, however, started by Andrew Poxton’s innings of 16.

Jamie Forster and Cam Mackay played themselves in and then hit some excellent attacking shots to take Morpeth into treble figures.

They looked well set for half-centuries, but Mackay was caught when on 43 and Forster was dismissed for 37 when his stroke found a fielder’s hands.

Soon afterwards, the hosts were all out for 142. Denton was the pick of the visitors’ bowling attack with figures of 4-33.

Alnmouth & Lesbury got their innings off to a bad start when Vickers was caught by Meikle off the bowling of Mackay for a duck.

But they recovered quickly and although James Craigs took two wickets, they reached their victory target with more than 13 overs to spare. Batey and Pearson both finished on 50 not out.

Morpeth finished the season bottom of the Division A2 table.

• The seconds were second bottom in Division B2 and they ended their fixtures with a heavy defeat after only nine players made the journey to play Alnmouth & Lesbury II.

In the hosts’ innings, Doug Turnbull took three wickets and Stephen Parsons claimed two scalps. Courtney scored a magnificent 152 not out.
