MORPETH’S Steve Fawcitt brought the curtain down on his final appearance in the Powerade PGA Assistants’ Championship at East Sussex National in style.
The 25-year-old, who has just completed his three-year PGA foundation degree, chipped in at his 54th and final hole at the £30,000 tournament to claim a share of third place.
His last hole heroics ensured a level par 72 final round and a two-over-par tournament total after previously carding rounds of 75 and 71 over the East Course.
Fawcitt had envisaged challenging the leaders, but it would have taken an explosive round to have captured the title as victory went to Leicestershire’s Matthew Cort – who carded a flawless eight-under-par 64 to win by six shots.
He said: “I’m pleased with how the tournament has gone for me this week. I holed a chip at the last for a birdie to get me into the top three and you can’t ask for a better finish than that.”
Fawcitt shared third place with overnight leader Paul Newman (East Berkshire), which saw him pick up a cheque for £1,950.
