Morpeth Ladies II 3 Newcastle University II 2
MORPETH’S staggering second squad once again secured success over perceived better opposition.
The vibes were not good when the University team arrived at Longhirst as ever with a well-organised gaggle of girls.
University didn’t seem to have read the script and scored within the first 30 seconds. It was just a wake-up call.
Morpeth rallied and looked quick on the break on both the left and right flank. After securing a penalty corner Wardle managed to convert with a thundering straight strike. The University keeper did manage to get to the shot but only with a foot, which aided the ball over the line. Goal stood, 1-1.
With changes made the University managed to score again. Another short corner was won with more excellent teamwork down the right. Wardle slipped to Smalley who walloped the ball home — 2-2 and half-time.
In he second half, Hall worked hard and effectively as left-half, linking well with Steele on the wing.
Smalley unselfishly made the third goal. She ran the ball to the opposition’s back line and rolled the ball, perfectly weighted, onto the stick of Steele, who slapped the ball fiercely into the goal.
From then on it was backs to the wall. The older heads of Hendy and Simpson combined brilliantly with the endeavour of Pick to make sure an equalizer never materialised.
