Durham University III 0 Morpeth I 2 North East Hockey League, Premier Division
ANOTHER strong performance saw Morpeth men’s first team prevail against a young and skilful Durham University side.
The first half saw the away side struggle to break down a strong Durham midfield, who looked to steal the ball and catch them on the break on numerous occasions.
But Morpeth were smart to this and were able to recover while limiting the amount of attacking chances.
At half-time, it was concluded that the whole team were sitting too deep. This was remedied to excellent effect after the break, as the visitors created many more chances.
Midway through the second half, Morpeth got the breakthrough they deserved after some hard work down the left-hand side from Malecki and an accurate cross from Calder ended with Valentine finishing the easiest of chances at the far post.
The second goal came shortly afterwards and was a real gem.
A number of penetrative pin-point passes in the midfield culminated with Danecki finding Brown free in the circle who, after an excellent pick up on the reverse side, committed the goalkeeper and found McPate on his left, who calmly slotted the ball into the empty goal.
Three wins from three now sees Morpeth at the top of the league and it bodes well for the rest of the season.
