Greenside II v Ponteland II Northumberland & Tyneside Senior League, Division B2
PONTELAND Seconds fell to an agonising defeat at Greenside when looking set for victory.
The visitors were initially up against it after being dismissed for 165.
After losing early wickets, Andrew Morgan (38) and James Ottaway (30) steadied the innings with what turned out to be high scores on the day.
David Waters and Chris Morgan played themselves in and looked set to at least match their counterparts higher up the order until they were dismissed for 23 and 20 respectively.
Ponteland were bowled out for 165. Gray was the pick of the Greenside II bowlers with figures of four for 24.
As there was plenty in the wicket, the away side still believed they could win and the bowlers made a cracking start by taking five quick wickets.
Wayne Denham got three of them and Jack Schofield took the other two.
Opener Wood was the only home batsman early on to dig in and he made a useful 28, but when he was bowled by Waters and Brown was trapped LBW by Andy Denyer for just one run, it looked all over for Greenside.
However, the wagging tail came to their rescue as Hawley (38 not out), Harvey (33) and Gray (29) all made match winning contributions and last man Russell (two not out) defended well to ensure his side won by one wicket.
John Hill and Matty Bell picked up a wicket each but Pont were left frustrated. The defeat meant they slipped to third in the table.
