Ponteland II (50-4) v Cowgate II (49 all out) Northumberland & Tyneside Cricket League, Division B2
PONTELAND Seconds managed to beat the rain to record an important victory thanks to a fantastic bowling performance.
The home side won the toss and decided to bowl. Early breakthroughs were made by John Gardner, who dismissed three top-order batsmen, and Duncan McGregor as Cowgate were four down for less than 10 runs.
Singh threatened to put together a decent innings until he was trapped lbw by Andy Denyer for 17.
Gardner took another two wickets to finish with outstanding figures of 5-11 off 13 overs. There were also a couple of run-outs as the visitors were all out for 49.
David Waters and Matty Bell got Pont’s reply off to a solid start, but when they were dismissed for 13 and 17 respectively a mini-collapse followed as Jonathan Varley and James Ottaway were both out cheaply.
However, man-of-the-match Gardner (10 not out) came in and together with Jeff Oliver (two not out) they saw Ponteland home to a six-wicket win that keeps them in the promotion driving seat.
Ponteland’s first team bowled well against Cowgate in their Division A2 game.
They restricted their opponents to 137-6 after 44.4 overs, with Craig Moffat taking four wickets and Iftikhar Fazal picking up two. But the rain arrived to stop the action and the game was drawn.
