Northumberland runner Laura Weightman has kicked off her track season in style with a personal best (pb) at the Eugene fixture of the Diamond League.

The 22-year-old ran 4:02.72 in yesterday’s 1500m event, finishing eighth in the process.

Her previous pb of 4:02.99 came in the semi-final of the London 2012 Olympics.

Weightman, from Lesbury, was the top Brit finisher in the Eugene race – which was won by Kenyan Hellen Obiri in 3:57.05 – finishing ahead of 12th-placed Hannah England, who ran a season’s best 4:07.40.

It is a great start to the summer season for Morpeth Harrier Weightman, who came into the race on the back of an altitude-training block in Utah.

Speaking of her delight on Facebook, she said: “Wow!! What a way to kick start my season here in Eugene...PB 4:02.7.”

The result will give her a huge confidence boost ahead of what she hopes is going to be a massive season, setting her sights on qualifying for both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships this summer.
