Whitwam battles through pain in steeplechase

In one of his last track outings before travelling to Lyon in France for the World Masters Athletics Championships, Morpeth Harrier Ady Whitwam finished 15th in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase at the CAU Inter Counties Championships.

The event also incorporated the English Athletics Senior Championships in Bedford.

The British Army and British Masters Cross Country Champion clocked a time of 9m46.34s.

Despite being badly barged at the first barrier, which resulted in his leg making contact with the barrier and it drawing blood, which was worsened by being spiked a little later to add to his troubles, Whitwam carried on bravely to the finish.

Most of his problems throughout were due to him having to engage barriers in a rather overcrowded 19 strong field.
