Morpeth let lead slip

Morpeth U15s 24 Ponteland U15s 24

A DISAPPOINTING performance saw Morpeth RFC U15s squander an early lead – and plenty of chances – to eventually hold out for a draw against local rivals Ponteland at Mitford Road.

Morpeth, possibly thinking that the game was a foregone conclusion after beating Ponteland so convincingly in an early pre-season friendly, never got going in a match that promised much, but in the end delivered very little.

After taking the lead through two Joe Turnbull tries, Morpeth failed to press home their early advantage after reshuffling the entire back-line, allowing the opposition to run in two soft tries to turn around 12-12 at half-time.

Poor tackling, lack of support, paucity in attack and a general lack of ambition were the hallmarks of a lacklustre Morpeth side that let in a third try just after the restart to trail the visitors until Jake Stephenson went over to even the score.

Ben Sweet then added a fourth and final try after some quick handling saw the winger go over in the corner.

Morpeth must have thought they’d done enough for the victory and went to sleep again, allowing Ponteland in with another soft score after several missed tackles failed to bring down their winger.

Sam Eyres added to Morpeth’s four tries with two conversions.

Morpeth have a lot to do if they are to improve on this performance ahead of a trip to Horden this weekend, but for now it’ll be Ponteland who are looking back with the greater satisfaction.
