Morpeth 9 Pocklington 3 North One East

THIS was a vital win for Morpeth in a hard-fought and close encounter that could have gone either way against an enthusiastic Yorkshire outfit.

The win had been a long time coming and hopefully will prove to be crucial in what looks like a very tight relegation dogfight.

The scoreline reflected the game itself, which could have gone either way, indeed Pocklington will be ruing two chances in the first 10 minutes which they knocked on with a scoring chance beckoning.

Had those chances been taken, then we could have been looking at a totally different result. As it was, the home side won through with not least a great deal of grit and determination.

The game was played in cold but good conditions, with Pocklington having first use of a fresh wind blowing almost straight down the pitch.

After those two early chances, it was a well-deserved penalty that gave Pocklington a deserved three-point lead, with Morpeth struggling to get any possession whatsoever and having little option but to defend.

It was not until the final 15 minutes of the half that Morpeth applied pressure, with Forsythe and Campbell to the fore. This pressure secured an easy penalty that Brown nonchalantly knocked over. It remained 3-3 until half-time.

The second half proved to be a tense encounter with neither side taking complete control, albeit Morpeth applied early pressure and increased their lead with two excellent efforts by Brown, one from fully 40 yards taking the score to 9-3.

Although the home side’s line-out began to suffer, they defended with tremendous spirit to ensure the points went the home side’s way.

THE next past players’ lunch at Morpeth will take place on Saturday, March 1, from 12.30pm. A three-course meal, priced £17, is available and after catching up with former team-mates to reminisce about the good old days, those who attend will have a choice as three of Morpeth’s senior sides are playing at home during the afternoon.
