Narrow win to end season

Winlaton Vulcans 10 Ponteland 13 Durham and Northumberland, Division Two

League champions Ponteland were able to grind out a victory with a patched up team in their final game of the season.

The visitors got off to an excellent start when full back Adam Suppan jinked 60 metres past quite a few Winlaton players to score one of the season’s best tries.

The hosts replied immediately and several forward drives saw them touch down to level the scores.

Back came Pont and they made their pressure count when Chris Searle scored following a strong 20-metre shunt. It was 10-5 to the away side at half time.

They were close to scoring at the start of the second half as Michael Searle cut through the home defence, but poor handling stopped what looked to be a certain try.

Winlaton responded well and after they disrupted a Ponteland scrum, only last ditch defending kept them out.

However, they made it 10-10 following a good move where they showed excellent handling and offloading.

Pont upped the pace and after running one kickable penalty, sense prevailed as Searle kicked the ball between the posts on 65 minutes.

The visitors missed a relatively easy kick, but they then controlled possession to run the clock down to end the game.
